Niso Sperotti (Verona, 1983 – Addis Abeba, 1968) era un ingegnere civile, laureato all’Università di Bologna dove il padre, insegnante di matematica in una scuola di ragioneria, si era trasferito con la famiglia per intraprendere la carriera di insegnante.
Prima di terminare gli studi, Niso si arruolò volontario nel corpo degli Alpini, durante la prima guerra mondiale, e gli venne concesso il congedo dopo aver raggiunto il grado di ufficiale. Si laureò in Ingegneria Civile all’Università di Bologna nel 1920.
Niso si trasferì nel Siam (l’odierna Thailandia) con la moglie nel 1920 e visse lì per dodici anni; in questo periodo nascono i due figli Maddalena (1929) ed Edoardo (1931).
In questi anni Niso ha contribuito in modo sostanziale alla realizzazione di nuove infrastrutture a Bangkok. Tra le sue opere, molte delle quali visibili ancora oggi, possiamo citare ponti, un ospedale, una biblioteca, alberghi, palazzi, mura della prigione di BangKwang oltre ad un convento francese con un proprio orfanotrofio femminile, donato da Niso e dai suoi famigliari agli orfani siamesi. Queste opere furono documentate da Niso attraverso l’obiettivo della sua macchina fotografica, che usò con una certa abilità, concentrandosi non solo sui dettagli ma anche sulla composizione complessiva delle sue immagini.
Niso Sperotti (Verona, 1983 – Addis Ababa, 1968) was a civil engineer, graduated at the University of Bologna where the father, a maths teacher at an accounting school, had moved with the family to pursue a teaching career.
Before finishing his studies, Niso enrolled as a voluntary in the Alpini, the Italian mountain infantry, during World War I, and he was granted leave after reaching the grade of officer. He graduated at the University of Bologna in Civil Engineering in 1920.
Niso moved to Siam (modern day Thailand) with his wife in 1920 and lived there for twelve years; during this time, their two children Maddalena (1929) and Edoardo (1931) were born.
During these years, Niso contributed substantially in the realization of new infrastructure in Bangkok. Among his works, many of which can still be seen today, we can cite bridges, a hospital, a library, hotels, mansions, jail walls, as well as a French nunnery with its own female orphanage, which was donated by Niso and his family to Siamese orphans. These works were documented by Niso through the lens of his camera, which he used with a certain skill, focusing not only on the details but also on the overall composition of his pictures.
